Red Man in Black Space

Mixed-media: plaster and fiberglass on armature. Colors are encaustics (hot wax--old crayons melted into the plaster with a propane torch) and acrylics. The armature was made from wood, chicken wire, and discarded pvc pipe. He is hollow, and the larger cavities of the chest and abdomen are filled with trashed newspaper--I think there's a Doritos bag in there.

Even though it has been many years since I sold Red Man, I still grieve the loss in a strange way. He is a conquering spirit. Nothing will ever stop his dance.

The Outside

(singing) I'm on the outside...I'm on the outside...

It's that strange sense of not fitting in with my two left feet. I'm not cool, you know, don't know when to slap hands, bump fists, or touch elbows in insider greetings. I've done some, but not a lot of the gallery circus or circuit. Couldn't stand art school. I've tried to stay fairly camouflaged in my life. Don't want to upset the other monkeys, you know. I've lost or forgotten the elements of my art career that might look good on a resume. I don't have a Speculum Vituitae.

On the other hand, the house is filling up with art. It does no good to hoard it. I guess I should make some friends and get it out there.
